چکیده

Simultaneous measurements were made of the cavitation event rates on a Schiebe body and the nuclei number distributions in the oncoming stream in the Low Turbulence Water Tunnel at Caltech. Cavitation inception occurred at an average cavitation number of 0.57. Cavitation event rates increased dramatically as the cavitation number was decreased. It was also found that both the magnitude and the shape of the nuclei distribution changed substantially with the operating condition. These changes had very strong effect on the event rate and therefore on cavitation inception number based on a fixed event rate. At the same cavitation number, the changes in the event rate due to different free stream nuclei populations can be as much as a decade. The changes in the shape of the nuclei distribution occurred mostly in the nuclei size range above 15 pm. The nuclei concentration tended to increase as cavitation number was decreased. And the cavitation event rate increased with the free stream nuclei concentration. The measured nuclei density distributions are used in an analytical model which attempts to correlate the event rate with the nuclei population. The predicted event rates are compared with those observed experimentally.

Cavitation Nuclei Population and Event Rates

To model the processes of cavitation inception, noise and damuge, it is necessaty to generate a model of the cavitation event rate which can then be coupled with the consequences of the individual events to produce a complete synthesis of thephenomenon. In this paper we describe recent efforts to connect the observed event rates to the measured distributions of cavitation nuclei in the oncoming...

Evaluation of Sonochemiluminescence in a Phantom in the Presence of Protoporphyrin IX Conjugated to Nanoparticles

Introduction When a liquid is irradiated with high-intensity and low-frequency ultrasound, acoustic cavitation occurs and there are some methods to determine and quantify this phenomenon. The existing methods for performing these experiments include sonochemiluminescence (SCL) and chemical dosimetric methods. The particles in a liquid decrease the ultrasonic intensity threshold needed for cavit...

Numerical Simulation of Cavitation in Mixed Flow Pump

The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance and three-dimensional behavior of the flow in a mixed flow pump and the way cavitation phenomenon is affected by different parameters such as fluid temperature, pump speed and flow rate. Computational fluid dynamic software FLUENT 6.3 was utilized to simulate the whole flow field of the pump. RNG k-ε model combined with standard wall f...

Numerical Simulation of Partial Cavitation over Axisymmetric Bodies: VOF Method vs. Potential Flow Theory

A computational study of partial cavitation over axisymmetric bodies is presented using two numerical methods. The first method is based on the VOF technique where transient 2D Navier-Stokes equations are solved along with an equation to track the cavity interface. Next, the steady boundary element method (BEM) based on potential flow theory is presented. The results of the two methods for a di...

Cavitation Scaling Experiments With Headforms: Bubble Acoustics

Recently Ceccio and Brennen [1][2][3] have examined the interaction between individual traveling cavitation bubbles and the structure of the boundary layer and flow field in which the bubble is growing and collapsing. They were able to show that individual bubbles are often fissioned by the fluid shear and that this process can significantly effect the acoustic signal produced by the collapse. ...
